Hammond Care - the glens
In 2020 the Hammond Care Group engaged Coolth Inc. to refresh the landscapes around their existing dementia facility at Caulfield Hospital. We had previously worked on the new village called The Cottages to the east in 2018, learning the key aspects of designing for a dementia care facility.
The Glens project involved the redesign of the surrounding landscape to upgrade the facility to a more inclusive space, larger gardens and employing strategies appropriate for the care facility. The client’s brief was to make the courtyards feel like home. Important to this design objective is designing to care for the residents as they traverse the contained courtyards.
Along with a soft sensual refresh of the entire planted space, the new gardens are designed to be safe and engaging for the residents and staff to enjoy. This included redesign of the public and entry spaces as a welcoming entry to the Hammond Care village, integrating the Kooyong Road frontage planting and contained courtyard fencing alignments for secure visual screening from within the new courtyard gardens.
Creating high utility surfaces, return loops for enhanced circulation and complementing with modern planting environments we were able to create two new welcoming and safe courtyard gardens. The use of furniture such as planters and incorporating seating for respite we were able to create strong visual cues for user orientation during a garden walk. Incorporating similar pathway and wayfinding infrastructure and lighting design as the new cottages to the east, Coolth Inc completed the design and construction upgrade to the Glens in mid 2023.
